Module 4 -   Making an Adapted Book with Boardmaker Plus

1.    Start by Launching Boardmaker Plus and Opening a “New” document

2.    Arrange your book for multiple pages to create a series of pages.  See the Quick Tips sheet “Multi-page Layout in Boardmaker Plus.”  Launch the Print Setup from the File menu.  For this book, it is best to have a Portrait layout, with pages each with a measurement of 10” wide and 8” long.  Thinking of a typical typing range on a page as being about 8x11 (with printing margins), we will create eight pages-four across and two down.  So the width of four pages side-by-side would be 32” and the length would be 21”  So in the “width” box at the top, type in 32 and in the length box, type 21.

3.    You will see green lines that indicate where the page breaks occur.  These are important for deciding where to arrange your material.  Please note, that depending on your printer, the page breaks may move slightly.  To address this for a different printer, you may later need to move some picture or text boxes to adjust for this.

4.  For  this book, we will have a big picture on each page, with a text-box of symbolate to describe the picture at the bottom of each page.  Begin with your adapted book by drawing a picture box that takes up a bit more than half of the page.  Use the Tip Sheet "Drawing a Cell in Boardmaker Plus" for further guidance.

5.  For the title page, we will write with plain text in a text box to create a title.  This means the title will have no visual images above or below the text.  To do this, create a text box under the picture cell, then choose the text button.  Place your cursor in the box and begin to type.  See the Quick Tip sheet, “Writing in Plain Text” for further guidance.  Arrange your text so it fits neatly in this text box.

6.    Beginning on page two of your book, we will use Symbolate to write out the text with visual supports (pictures) above the text. This will be used to tell the story.

7.    Select the Symbolate Tool in the top Toolbar.  Move your Symbolate cursor to the bottom of Page Two and click and hold down your cursor, dragging your cursor across the screen to create your Symbolate text box.  See the Quick Tips sheet, “Basic Typing in Symbolate.” Note—you can only go one way—across (not down).  This is o.k.  The box will expand as you type.)

8.  Begin to type - words and symbols will appear

9.    After you finish typing, you can adjust your font by clicking the highlighting the typed text and choosing the “Text” Menu at the top of the page.  You can change the font, size and style through this menu.

10.    In the Symbolate feature, you may choose to alter the picture, or have no visual support at all for some words.  See the following Tip sheets for additional guidance: Changing the Symbol for a Word-Symbol Pairing, Changing the Default Word-Symbol Pairing, Changing the Text for a Word-Symbol Pairing

11.    Now we have some text for the beginning of the book, we will need to find a picture from the Picture Library that supports this text.  Use your Symbol Finder and the Picture Library to locate and select an appropriate picture.  Use the cursor to place the picture in the picture box over the Symbolate text.

12.     When this is done, you will now be ready for Page Three!  Reapeat, beginning with step 9 and continue to complete your book.

13.    Save your work!
